Increase Your Science-Teaching Mojo With These 4 Tips

Often just the word “science” can strike the fear into the heart of homeschool mom. Many fear that because we disliked science or didn’t understand the subject, there’s no way that we could ever be a good science teacher.

But this doesn’t have to be the case! You can teach science, even if the thought of science textbooks and dissections makes you want to gag.

Here are four tips to increase your science-teaching mojo! 

Tip #1 – Do lots of hands-on.        

What kid doesn’t prefer to do a hands-on project over reading about a subject in a textbook? After all, doing it is way more fun than reading about it!

Adding scientific demonstrations, experiments, nature study, online dissections, and even science fair projects serve to ramp up your student’s interest in the subject. Plus it gives your child a chance to see the principles he or she is learning about in action!

Doing science instead of reading about it in boring book will serve to make you look like a super-star science teacher. 

Tip #2 – Read oodles of great non-fiction and living books.    

There are a multitude of options available to help you study science beyond the standard textbook.

Non-fiction books like the Let’s Read and Find Out series allow you to dig deeper into a subject at a level that your student will understand. Living books like the Sassafras Science Adventures and the Burgess Bird Book create excitement and adventure around science facts for your child.

Reading from these resources makes learning scientific information tons of fun, which will cause your student to think you rock at teaching science. 

Tip #3 – Watch tons of science video.    

Videos from Magic School Bus, National Geographic, BBC, and more bring a visual tie-in to the principles your student needs to know. Plus, watching a movie is a great break from the standard routine.

Letting your child watch movies for science one day will definitely increase your cool-science-teacher factor. 

Tip #4 – Get the right curriculum.    

The right curriculum supports your weak spots and adds to your strengths. It will provide the guidance and direction you need. No one curriculum fits every homeschooler, so don’t be afraid to look at all the options before you decide which one will work for you. And if it turns out that after several months, it just isn’t working, don’t be afraid to pitch it for something new.

Having the right curriculum on hand will serve to give you the confidence you need to be the best science teacher you can be.

Can We Shelter Our Kids and Still Trust God?

Saturday night I drove away from my brother’s house, leaving behind my oldest daughter (age 10) and part of my heart.

Our daughter had a wonderful opportunity to spend several days with her aunt at a local county fair, helping to take care of the farm animals alongside the agriculture students from a nearby high school. She has been talking about becoming a farmer for the last couple years and this was an opportunity that she didn’t want to pass up. Apparently guinea pigs are just a gateway animal. Fortunately for us the city has regulations about farm animals within city limits!

As I left her behind, I was at once peaceful and anxious. The peace was peace that only comes from God, the kind that passes all understanding. I knew that we were doing the right thing. I knew that she’d be as safe as her aunt and uncle could make her. I knew that we had prepared her for an opportunity just like this. Not the taking care of animals part; I have no idea how to do that. But the growing up part. The making good decisions part. We’ve been teaching and guiding and training her from when she was a wee little girl. 

But there comes a time when the rubber has to meet the road. 

A few weeks ago the podcast focused on homeschool grads and if they felt prepared for life after high school. The nugget of wisdom that I took away, and had already been thinking about for several months, was that we as Christians live in the world, but we don’t have to be like the world. But in order to be salt and light in this world, we need to know how to engage with people. How can we engage with people if we never talk to them? Or listen to them? Or even have any idea how to interact with them?

My husband and I have been talking about this issue for years. It is a delicate balance between protecting our children until they are mature enough to process information themselves and just plain sheltering them. We are constantly evaluating where each of our children are so that we can best decide what information they need. It is a tough call most of the time.

We believe strongly in walking alongside our children through life so that we can help them navigate some really tough decisions. But we are also aware that there comes a time when they have to flex their muscles independent of us. And instead of sheltering our children for 18 years and then throwing them into the deep end that is the world outside our family, we have to give them opportunities here and there to try out those muscles as they are growing. 

This is one of those times. 

It may seem like no big deal. So what? She spends a few days with some other kids, learning how to shear a sheep and milk a cow. 

And this is where the anxiety part came in. These are public school kids! These are older kids! I don’t know their parents! I don’t know what kind of families they come from or if they have ever even heard the name of Jesus. 

That’s kinda the point. 

This is an opportunity for our daughter to stretch those muscles that she’s been developing, while still being cared for by people that love her and want God’s best for her. 

This parenting gig is tough. I am absolutely positive that if one day in the future Fletch and Kendra interview my kids, at least one of them will tell their story of the way my husband and I screwed up. Since it’s inevitable, we’re just going to keep pointing our kids to Jesus. And pray that they in turn will point other people to Jesus.

Why I Walked Out on God

Once upon a time, there lived a good little church girl.

Faithfully, she attended every Sunday and Wednesday, learning about the God who loved her so very much. Then, one Sunday morning, she decided she no longer needed the church. In fact, she didn't even need God. With yearning in her heart, she walked out without so much as a backwards glance and no intentions of turning back.

If you're starting to feel a little uneasy, relax. This story has a good ending. I should know, because "that girl" was me two years ago.

I had attended church ever since a onesie and bib were acceptable church attire. Growing up, I went to Sunday school, children's church, and Wednesday nights faithfully each week. I loved church. I had never felt unloved inside its walls . . . until junior high.

In sixth grade, everything changed. Suddenly, the peers who had been my friends wanted nothing to do with me. I learned very quickly that it doesn't take loud proclamations to make it clear you are unwanted. Most of the time, all it takes is a tightly closed circle and locked lips. When I was spoken to, it was often to offer "concerned advice", where I was given a laundry list of all the ways I was "stumbling". Unfortunately, no matter how hard I tried, there always seemed to be a new area in need of moral TLC.

Confused and hurt, I approached a trusted youth leader with the problems I was facing. His response was that I must not be trying hard enough. Worried, I began to attend every youth event there was. Usually a little more on the quiet side, I made sure that I approached others first instead of waiting to be sought out. I even joined the worship band. Still, it wasn't enough.

When freshman year rolled around, I had high hopes, but I soon found that the gap had only widened. My will to try was fading and by sophomore year, I was attending fewer and fewer youth events. Junior year, I went to Sundays and Wednesdays only, and come senior year, I decided that not only did I not need a church who didn't need me, but I couldn't serve a version of God that was so superficial. I believed in God, I just didn't know who He was anymore. I began reading about other religions and their practices. I researched different lifestyle choices. I even studied up on the physical psychology of spirituality.

When I went off to college, I turned to learning from the world around me. I learned from quiet whisperings and acts of Grace I didn't deserve. Most importantly, I learned by being removed from what I had always known. Hearing how other people talked about the church and understanding their point of view convicted me of many things. I was able to find my feet, standing firmly in who I was in God, not who my church peers, or even the church staff, said I was. I learned how I was called to serve Him, not how the church said I was called to serve Him. In the silence, I learned to listen to His voice, because it was all I had.

Many young people, at some point, struggle to make their faith their own and I think it can be terrifying, as a parent, to watch them go in a direction you did not prepare them for. I don’t have children, but I think it might feel a little like failure; that perhaps there was something you could have done to prevent it. As a young person who went down that road, and still takes occasional detours, I'm here to tell you it's okay and that God is never out of control.

First, you are not your child.

Although they came from you, even though they were, or are, under your care, they are their own entity. That means they come with their own personal battles. When these battles are fought, it doesn't mean you failed. It simply means they are living life, as everyone must.

Second, there are many spiritual whisperings and movements that cannot be seen from the outside.

Believe me, big things are happening in the heart and mind of your child. They may not express these thoughts or deal with them in a way you can measure as "progress", but I promise you, just because they are questioning doesn't mean their hearts and brains have died, and neither has God and His infinite control.

Third, questions do not mean they are "lost forever".

If God is all-powerful, if He cannot be disproven, then He will reveal Himself. His light and truth will only grow stronger. It may take a year, or it may take 80, but no circumstance is ever out of His control.

Once upon a time, there was a young woman in a church parking lot. She stood silently gazing at the steeple above as church-goers flooded past her, Bibles in hand. She did not look like the others. She wore scars upon her heart that ached for the struggles of those that surrounded her. She sought out those who thought themselves invisible, and she now knew that she must always listen to God first, and preaching second. Two years ago, she had walked out on God, and today, with one final deep breath, she fixed her eyes on the doors ahead and walked back in.
